Treating Those Touched by the Evil Eye

The Prophet’s Guidance on Treating Those Touched by the Evil Eye

Imaam Muslim (and Ahmad, Ibn Hibban, Al Hakim, and At Tabaraani رحمهم الله) narrated that Ibn ‘Abbaas (رضي الله عنهما) said, TheMessenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:“The evil eye is true and if there’s anything that would precede Predestination it would bethe evil eye.”

Also, Muslim (رحمه الله) narrated that Anas (رضي الله عنه) said: “The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) has allowed using Islaamic prayer formulas (Ruqyah, divine remedy) against fever, the evil eye and sores.”
In As Saheehayn (Bukhaaree and Muslim) it’s narrated that Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) said that the Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, “The evil eye is true.”

{Abu Daawud, Ibn Maajah and Ahmad}
Abu Daawud (رحمه الله) reported that ‘Aaishah (رضي الله عنها) said, “The person who touched others with the evil eye was commanded to perform ablution and the person whom he touched by the evil eye would wash with that water.”

{Bukhaaree, Muslim, An Nasaa-ee, Ibn Maajah, Abu Na’eem, and Al Ismaa’eeli}

Further, ‘Aaishah (رضي الله عنها) narrated as the Saheehayn reported: “The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) commanded me (or commanded) that we should use Islaamic prayer formulas from the evil eye.

Asmaa Bint Umays (رضي الله عنها) said: “I said, O Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم)! The children of Ja’far are usually touched by the evil eye. Should I perform an Islaamic prayer formula for them? He (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, “Yes. If there is anything that precedes Predestination, it would be the evil eye.”

{An Nasaa-ee, and Ahmad}

Also, Imaam Maalik (رحمه الله) narrated that ‘Amir bin Rabi’ah once saw Sahl bin Hunaif take a bath and said, “By Allaah! I have never seen the skin of a virgin that is softer than what I have just seen.” Sahl feel to the ground. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) then cam to ‘Amir while angry and said to him: “Why would one of you kill his own brother? Why have you not said Tabrik (i.e. to say بارك اللّه Baarakallaah may Allaah bless it)? Take a bath for it.”

‘Amir then washed his face, hands, elbows, knees, feet and a part of his garment in a pot for what he has done and then poured the used water on Sahl. Soon after, Sahl started moving about the people.

{An Nasaa-ee, Ibn Maajah, Ahmad, Al Hakim, and Ibn Hibban}

Maalik also narrated: “The evil eye is true, so perform ablution for it.”

Another hadeeth narrated by ‘Abdur Razzaaq reads: “The evil eye is true and if there is anything that precedes Predestination it would be the evil eye. When one is touched by the evil eye, he should take a bath for it.”

At Tirmidhee (رحمه الله) said: “The person who touched others with the evil eye should be commanded to submerge his hand in a pot of water and them wash his mouth, then spit the water back into the pot. He should then wash his face in the pot, then submerge his left hand in it and pour some water on the right knee above the pot and then submerge his right hand and pour water on his left knee. He should then wash his garment inside the pot and the water should not be spilled on the ground. Rather, it should be poured on top of the person whom he touched by the evil eye from behind all at once.”
