Life in Jeddah

When the Water Runs Dry…

As salaamu ‘alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh. Our neighborhood is still being built, so the water sometimes stops running (it’s not like this all over Jeddah). A worker for our building usually goes door to door collecting money to fill up the well that’s on top of the roof. We may be without running water for 15 minutes, a day, 2 days or even 3 1/2 days. We have water stored away in large jugs for cleaning, making wudhoo, etc.

The temporary cessation of water in our wells is not the same as water as water disappearing in the depths of the earth. It can be a hardship but at the same time it causes us to remember Allaah and reflect upon his sayings.

Sooratul Mulk: 67:30

Tafseer Ibn Katheer

قُلْ أَرَءَيْتُمْ إِنْ أَصْبَحَ مَآؤُكُمْ غَوْراً

“Say: “Tell me! If your water were to sink away…”

Ibn Katheer (rahimahullaah) said: Meaning, if it were to go away, disappearing into the lowest depths of the earth, then it would not be reachable with iron axes nor strong arms. “Sinking”used here in the ayah, is the opposite of springing forth. This is why Allaah says,

فَمَن يَأْتِيكُمْ بِمَآءٍ مَّعِينٍ

“Who then can supply you with flowing water?”

Meaning, springing forth, flowing, running upon the face of the earth. This means that no one is able to do this except Allaah. So, it is merely out of His favor and His grace that He causes water to spring forth for you, and He makes it run to the various regions of the earth in an amount that is suitable for the needs of servants, be it little or abundant. So, for Allaah is all the praise and thanks.

End of the Tafseer.

My friends sometimes go without running water for 2 weeks! When it comes on, the children jump and shout “al moyaah fee,”(the water is on/the water is present)! Everyone becomes happy, Alhamdulillaah. Every situation of the Muslim is good. Alhamdulillaah is all situations!
