Women Outnumber Men Who Memorized Qur’an in Asyah
Khaled Al-Awadh, Arab News

BURAIDAH, 8 June 2008 — Twenty Holy Qur’an memorizers were honored at a special function held in a mosque in Al-Asyah, 65 kilometers east of Buraidah, recently. The event was sponsored by Al-Asyah Philanthropic Society.

For the first time in the history of Al-Asyah Society for Memorizing the Holy Qur’an, women graduates outnumbered men graduates: 11 women memorized the entire Qur’an this year against nine men.

The graduates received cash prizes and certificates from Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University. There are 12 Qur’an schools for women run by the Al-Asyah Philanthropic Society.

“In Buraidah, there are more than 30 schools for women,” said Ali ibn Mohammad Al-Ajlan, general director of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs’ branch in the city.

Citing the criticism of some writers on the role of Qur’an memorization societies, Sulaiman ibn Abdulrahman Al-Rubei, the head of Qassim Holy Qur’an Philanthropic Society played down such propaganda and described the Qur’an memorization societies as “strong, solid and clean.”

Al-Rubei pointed out that the number of graduates of these societies reached 2,300 in Qassim alone. “Qur’an schools for girls have reached 130 schools in the region,” he added. The number of students at Al-Asyah Society alone has reached about 1,600. They belong to 94 groups in different mosques in Al-Asyah.

More than 150 students have memorized the Qur’an and now lead prayers in local mosques or work as teachers. The society has established 12 centers for women with more than 530 students.

Among the graduates honored is Amanullah Wali Al-Rahman Khan, a 12-year-old Indian student who memorized the entire Qur’an. Amanullah’s sister, Asmaa, is one of the 11 women graduates who were honored at the function.

“I thank God for helping me to memorize the Holy Qur’an at this young age. It is a great pride and at the same time a big responsibility. I thank everyone who has helped me to achieve this goal, including my parents and teachers,” the boy said.

Schools for Children

Posted in Kidz, Quraan, Schools for Children tagged at 9:06 am by Desert Diaries

As salaamu ‘alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh. Many sisters want to know about schools in Jeddah for children covering subjects like reading, math, science, etc. Wallaahi I don’t have any info to give you right now. ‘Afwaan. My daughter was only 1 and 1/2 years old when we made hijrah so, I did not look into these things. Alhamdulillaah, now she’s old enough to attend school and finding a good one for her is a concern of mine. I’ll keep you updated on my findings In Shaa Allaah.

I do know that children 3 and up can attend tahfeeth schools. Some will take them at 2 and 1/2 if they are potty trained. They are taught to read and write ‘Arabic, short suwar, short ahaadeeth, basic English like A, B, C, 1, 2, 3 and do activities for their age level. They even have Tawheed classes, Maa Shaa Allaah. It’s beautiful to hear the babies say” Ar Rahmaanu ‘alal ‘Arsh Istawaa.”

Here’s some info on the school I attended some time ago: Daarul Haafithaat al ‘Ishreen - Quraan Memorization School for Women & Children

Sisters living in Jeddah - You are very much welcome to share your experiences, give advice related to living here and whatever else you have of benefit.

Some Thoughts on Soorah al Faatihah

Posted in Quraan, Tawheed tagged , at 10:36 am by Desert Diaries

Some Thoughts on Soorah al-Faatihah
Author: Sr. Nada Tayfour
Source: Adapted from Ibn a-Qayyim’s ‘Madarij’

Reciting Sooratul-Faatihah as we all know, is an essential part of our daily prayers. It was narrated by Ubada bin As-Samit that Allah’s Messenger (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said, ” Whoever does not recite Surat Al-Fatiha in his prayer, his prayer is invalid”. This motivates every Muslim to understand the deep meanings behind the words of this Soorah. Consequently , this helps us in keeping Khushoo’ while standing in front of Allaah in our prayers. In this Soorah we start by praising Allah the Lord of mankind, jinns and all that exists, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful, and the only Owner of the Day of Recompense. Then we declare that we worship Him alone, and from Him alone we ask for help.

Then we ask Him to guide us to the straight path. In his valuable book “Al- Madaarij As-Saalikeen ” Ibn Al-Qayyim points out three levels of guidance.

First , Guidance of Bayaan, “clarification”. This does not happen except through Allah’s prophets whom He sends to explain to mankind the essence of His message and to show them the way to the straight path.

Second, Guidance of Tawfeeq, “success” (on the straight path). In this level we ask Allah to open our hearts to his religion and to be steadfast upon it; by this it becomes the most precious thing in our lives.

Although these two levels of Guidance are separate, reaching the straight path would not be achieved except by them both. These two levels include gaining the knowledge of what we did not know about the truth and becoming anxious to follow it openly and secretly, the ability to fulfill our duty through our sayings, actions and intentions, and to ask Allah to keep us firm on this path till we die.

Some people would ask why do we need to ask for guidance while we are already guided; we know Allah and we believe in Him? We need to believe without doubt that we all are always in need to ask for guidance because the things which we do not know are more than the things which we know. The things which we do not do due to our carelessness or laziness are much more than the things which we do, the same can be said about the things which we are incapable of doing. Those of us who do not see any lack concerning their knowledge or practice need to ask the guidance from Allah to keep them in this state till they die.

The third level of guidance would be the guidance in the Day of Judgement to the way which leads to Paradise . Whoever is guided in life to Allah’s path according to what He sent His messengers with, would be guided to the straight path in the Hereafter.

If we want to know how we are going to pass the straight path above Hell in the Hereafter we have to examine the way we are passing Allah’s path in this life. We are going to walk there the same way we walk here. Some people would pass like a glimpse, some would pass like the wind ,some would walk slowly and some would creep and others would stuck and then would be thrown in hell fire. So let each one of us examine the way we will pass there from the way we are passing here. And let us examine carefully the things which are holding us from passing the straight pass whether they are our desires or confused ideas. These things are like chains which delay or stop our movement on the straight path. It is really fearful to say that if these chains are many, solid and heavy here in life they are going to be the same when we are going to pass the straight pass above Hell.

When we ask Allah in Sooratul-Faatihah to guide us to the straight path we ask Him to put us with those whom He has bestowed His Grace on. Here we need to ask two questions.
First, who are those people ?

Second, if we choose to follow the straight path which leads to Allah why do we need to be accompanied with those people?

Ibn Al-Qayyim explained that the one who wants to follow the straight path in this life finds that the majority of people around him or her do not want to follow the same path. And because the human soul normally looks for a companion Allah pointed out the importance for having a company on this road. Allah  defined this company by saying in Surah An-Nisa verse 69:

“Those on whom Allah has bestowed His Grace, of the Prophets, the Siddiqun (those followers of the prophets who were first and foremost to believe in them, like Abu Bakr As-Siddiq), the martyrs, and the righteous. And how excellent these companions are!”

If sometimes we feel lonely when passing Allah’s path we need to think of those who passed or are passing the same path, to know that they are our company , and to make our best to follow their steps. At the same time we should not pay any attention to those who do not want to choose the same path and should be strong enough so we do not let them detain us.

One of Al-Salaf said: “Stick firmly to the path of truth and do not feel lonely because of the few number of people who would join you, and be aware of the path of misguidance and do not be mislead with the large number of the destroyed).”

And from Allaah is all help sought.

“So, How Can he not Love Him?”

Posted in Quraan, Seeking Knowledge, Tawheed tagged , , , , , at 10:15 am by Desert Diaries

As salaamu ‘alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh.

Excerpt from the Book “Al Fawaa-id”………

The servant never ceases to benefit from reflecting on the Book of Allaah. His heart bears witness to such types of knowledge that increase his faith and strengthen it. How can this not be so? When he finds within the Quraan, a King who is Glorious, Merciful, Generous and Beautiful; this is His standing.”

“So how can he not love Him, compete to attain a nearness to Him or use up his energy in trying to show love for Him? How can He not be more beloved to Him than anything else? How can he not prefer His pleasure to anyone else’s pleasure? How can he not be attached to His remembrance? How can his love for Him, his desire to meet Him and feeling close to Him not be his nourishment, strength and medicine, in that if he were to be bereft of this, he would become corrupt and ruined and would not benefit from his life?”

Advice Regarding the Quraan by ‘Abdullaah bin Saalih

Posted in Quraan, Ramadhaan, Seeking Knowledge tagged , , , , at 4:40 pm by Desert Diaries

AUTHOR: ‘Abdullaah bin Saalih Al-Fawzaan
SOURCE: Ahaadeeth As-Siyaam: Ahkaam wa Adaab (pg.63-65)
PRODUCED BY: www.Al-Ibaanah.com

Abu Umaamah (radhiyallaahu `anhu) reported that the Prophet (sallallaahu `alaihi wa sallam) said: “Recite the Qur’aan for indeed it will come on the Day of Judgement as an intercessor for its Ashaab (those who read, memorize and implement it).” [1]

This hadeeth indicates the virtues of reciting the Qur’aan, the greatness of its reward and that it will intercede for its holders on the Day of
Judgement towards their entrance into Paradise.

An-Nawaas bin Sama’aan (radhiyallaahu `anhu) reported: “I heard the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu `alaihi wa sallam) say: ‘The Qur’aan will be brought on the Day of Judgement as well as the people who used to act upon it. Sooratul-Baqarah and Aali ‘Imraan will then approach them.’ The Messenger of Allaah likened them to three examples, which I have not forgotten afterwards. He (sallallaahu `alaihi wa sallam) said: ‘As if they were two clouds or two dark black canopies with light between them both or like two flocks of birds stretching their wings in the air pleading for the one who recited them.’” [2]

‘Abdullaah bin ‘Amr (radhiyallaahu `anhu) reported that the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu `alaihi wa sallam) said: “The fast and the Qur’aan will intercede for the servant on the Day of Judgement. The fast will say: ‘My Lord, I restricted him from food and drink, so allow me to intercede for him.’ And the Qur’aan will say: ‘I prevented him from sleeping at night, so allow me to intercede for him’ So they will be allowed to intercede.” [3]

Therefore, it is essential for the person fasting to recite the Qur’aan much during these blessed days and honorable nights. For indeed, there is a special virtue for the abundance of recitation in these days, which is not found in any other month. He should take advantage of the nobleness of time
during this month in which Allaah revealed the Qur’aan.

There is a special merit to reciting the Qur’aan in the nights of Ramadhaan for indeed, the night brings an end to the busy daily affairs. The
enthusiasm is roused and the heart and the tongue mount upon reflecting. Allaah is the one in whom we seek assistance.

It is reported that Jibreel (’alaihis salaam) used to meet with the Prophet (sallallaahu `alaihi wa sallam) during each night of Ramadhaan and they would study the Qur’aan together. [4] So if making dhikr (remembrance of Allaah) were Better than the Qur’aan or equal to it (on these nights), they would have done that all the time or at certain times along with constantly gathering for that occasion.

Thus, this hadeeth illustrates the precedence of studying the Qur’aan during Ramadhaan and gathering together for that occasion as well as turning towards one who is more prominent in the memorization of it.

The predecessors of this Ummah would recite the Qur’aan constantly during Ramadhaan. When they would fast, they would sit in the masaajid and say: “We will guard our fast and not backbite anyone.”

They would recite the Qur’aan in their prayer and out of it. ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallaahu `anhu) would complete the recitation of the (whole) Qur’aan once a day. Some of the Salaf would complete it during their qiyaam in Ramadhaan every three nights. Some of them would do it every seven days and some every ten days.

Ash-Shaafi’ee (rahimahullaah) would complete the Qur’aan sixty times during Ramadhaan, while reciting it outside of prayer. Al-Aswad (rahimahullaah) would recite the whole Qur’aan every two nights of Ramadhaan. Qataadah (rahimahullaah) would always complete the Qur’aan
every seven days. He would do it every three days in Ramadhaan, and during the last ten days, he would do it every night. Their reports concerning
That are famous.

Al-Haafidh Ibn Rajab (rahimahullaah) said: “The forbiddance of reciting the Qur’aan in less than three days (as stated in a hadeeth) has only been mentioned in regards to its being done on a normal basis. As for the specific times that are virtuous, such as the month of Ramadhaan and especially the nights in which the night of Al-Qadr is sought. Or those places that are virtuous, such as Makkah for the one who enters it without residing there, then it is recommended to recite the Qur’aan a lot in these Times and places, seeking the merits connected with their time and place. This is the opinion of Ahmad, Abu Ishaaq and other scholars. And the actions of others indicate that as has been stated previously.” [5]

The person reciting the Qur’aan must observe the proper etiquettes of recitation. Some of them are that: He make his intention sincerely for
Allaah, that he recite it whilst being in a state of purity, that he use the Siwaak and that he recite it while pondering on its meaning and
observing total consciousness. Allaah says:

“A Book, which We have revealed to you in order that its verses may be
pondered upon, so that the people of understanding may be reminded.”

Also, from the etiquettes of the recitation is that one does not stop his reciting in order to speak to someone else. Indeed, when many people sit to
recite the Qur’aan, and there are people sitting next to them, a majority of the time, they stop their recitation and speak to their neighbors. This is not proper
since it is turning away from the recitation without a valid reason.

And it is on the one who recites, to act upon the Qur’aan, making permissible its Halaal and forbidding its Haraam, so that the Qur’aan can
be a proof for him on the Day of Judgement and intercede for him in entering the gardens of bliss.

So, Who Was it Then that Was Crucified?

Allaah said,

﴿فَأَيَّدْنَا الَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ عَلَى عَدُوِّهِمْ﴾

(So, We gave power to those who believed against their enemies,) that is,`We gave them victory over the group of Christians which defied them,’

﴿فَأَصْبَحُواْ ظَـهِرِينَ﴾

“And they became the victorious (uppermost).” - over the disbelieving group, when We sent Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).’

Imaam Abu Ja`far bin Jareer At-Tabari (may Allaah have mercy upon him) reported that Ibn `Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said, “When Allaah decided to raise `Eesaa (Jesus - peace be upon him) to heaven, `Eesaa went to his companions while drops of water were dripping from his head. At that time, there were twelve men at the house. `Eesaa said to them, `Some of you will disbelieve in me twelve times after having believed in me.’ He then asked, `Who among you volunteers that he be made to resemble me and be killed instead of me; he will be with me in my place (in Paradise).’ One of the youngest men present volunteered, but `Eesaa commanded him to sit down. He repeated his statement and the young man again stood up and volunteered, and `Eesaa again told him to sit down. He repeated the same statement and the young man volunteered. This time, `Eesaa (peace be upon him) said, `Then it will be you.’

The appearance of ‘Eesaa was cast upon that young man, while `Eesaa, peace be upon him, was raised to heaven through an opening in the roof of the house. The Jews came looking for `Eesaa and arrested the one that appeared as him, killing him by crucifixion.

Some of them disbelieved in `Eesaa twelve times, after they had believed in him. They divided into three groups. One group, Al-Ya`qubiyyah (the Jacobites), said, Allaah (God) remained with us as much as He willed and then ascended to heaven.’ Another group, An-Nasturiyyah (the Nestorians), said, Allaahs’ son remained with us as much as Allaah willed and He then raised him up to heaven.’ A third group said, “Allaahs’ servant and Messenger remained with us as much as Allaah willed and then Allaah raised him up to Him.’ The last group was the Muslim group. The two disbelieving groups collaborated against the Muslim group and annihilated it. Islaam remained unjustly concealed until Allaah sent Muhammad.

Memorizing the Quraan - Think Positive!

Posted in Quraan, Seeking Knowledge at 4:34 am by Desert Diaries

As salaamu ‘alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh.

وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْآنَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ

And We have indeed made the Qur’ân easy to understand and remember, then is there any that will remember (or receive admonition)?

Al-Qamar 54:17

Once in Quraan class a student was having difficulty remembering some aayaat in order. She told the instructor that she couldn’t do it, “it was hard.” She said this over and over throughout the class. The teacher advised her by to stop telling herself that, or it would become a reality for her. She said (more or less) that doctors researched this type of behavior and had evidence that if you keep telling yourself negative things such as “I can’t,” or “It’s too hard,” you’ll believe them and it will be a barrier between you and your goals.

This made me reflect on myself. Without being conscious of it most of the time I realized that I’ve said things like this.

وَإِمَّا يَنزَغَنَّكَ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ نَزْغٌ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللّهِ إِنَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ

And if an evil whisper comes to you from Shaitân (Satan) then seek refuge with Allâh. Verily, He is All-Hearer, All-Knower.

Al-A’raf 7:200

One time I was preparing to take on a new Soorah and a bad thought entered my mind. I remember the words so clear because it was as if the voice came from someone standing next to me. The whisperer said: “I don’t know why you’re about to start a new Soorah. You know that you’re going to confuse the aayaat with others similar to it.” A’oodhu billaah - for a split second I agreed with the whisperer. Then I said “Hey! I know who you are and I AM going to memorize it.” I asked myself if I had sought Allaah’s refuge prior to…..I couldn’t remember if I did or not. So, I sought His refuge and achieved what I was aiming to achieve, Maa Shaa Allaah.

فَإِذَا قَرَأْتَ الْقُرْآنَ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ

So when you want to recite the Qur’ân, seek refuge with Allâh from Shaitân (Satan), the outcast (the cursed one).

An-Nahl 16:98

I hope this helps someone bi-idhnillaah. Think positive!

Study Tips: 7 Ways to Fight Laziness, Boredom & Weakness

Posted in 'Arabic, Quraan, Seeking Knowledge at 4:29 am by Desert Diaries

7 Ways to Fight Laziness, Boredom & Weakness When Trying to Study

Shaikh Ahmad Najmee

Question: “I’m weak in my reading the books of benefit and when I begin to read some of the books of `ilm (knowledge) I feel weakness and boredom; so what is your advice for me, and what is the correct path in reading the books which contain beneficial knowledge; benefit us (those seeking reward)?”

Answer -  Firstly: It is a must for the one who seeks knowledge to purify his intention for Allaah the Lord of the worlds, and make his seeking the `ilm (knowledge) being only for the purpose and goal of obtaining the pleasure of Allaah; and in order to know the truth, to act by it, and to know falsehood so as to refrain from it.

Secondly: To act by that, which he has learned from knowledge within in himself, and to try and teach what he has learned from knowledge to others.

Thirdly: To safeguard what he has learned by memorizing it, and reviewing the `ilm(knowledge) so it does not escape him.

Fourthly: To be steadfast in learning what he does not know, so to add knowledge on top of knowledge.

Fifthly: To ask Allaah constantly to bestow & grant him with beneficial knowledge and provisions that are vast, and actions that are accepted; and the Prophet (Sallallaahu `Alaihi Was Sallam) would say if he prayed the fajr prayer after he would make tasleem (salaam to the right then the left) this du’aa: ” O Allaah, I ask you for knowledge which is beneficial and sustenance which is good, and deeds which are acceptable.” (To be said after making salaam for the fajr prayer).

Sixthly: If he was to feel tired and weak when he is in front of knowledge and ready to study, then he should ask Allaah to make for him will power and a desire to gain knowledge and dedicate himself to it.

Seventhly: Its obligatory on the student of knowledge to refrain from disobedience, for indeed disobedience kills the heart and weakens the understanding and its narrated about Imaam Shaafi’ee he said: “I complained to my teacher Wa’kee about my weak memory so he directed me to leave of sin and then he said, `know!!!! That knowledge is light; and the light of Allaah He does not give it to a disobedient person.”

And I say the proof for that is found in the Book of Allaah when He Glorified be He Says, O you who believe! If you obey and Fear Allaah, He will grant you Furqaan a criterion, and will expiate for you your sins, and forgive you, and Allaah is the Owner of Great Bounty.O you who believe Fear Allaah, and believe too in His Messenger (SallAllaahu `Alaihi Wa Sallam), he will give you a double portion of His Mercy, and he will give you a light by which you shall walk (straight), and he will forgive you. And Allaah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”

So what is important is that the student of knowledge needs consistent striving, striving against himself and against ones passions and lower desires and its greed, and to tire himself out in acquiring knowledge, and to hope that Allaah will enable him to achieve that, and the success (tawfeeq) is from Allaah.

Shaykh Bazmool (hafithahullaah) said: If an individual is able to be consistent with the classes on the radio, for example the classes of Shaykh Saalih al Fawzaan or other than him (may Allaah preserve them) from the scholars that are well known who’s classes are broadcasted on the Quraan Radio  station (KSA). It is upon the individual to be consistent with this program .

This is very good, but at the same time, I warn of some stations that have lessons with individuals who’s affairs are not known or those who are known to have deviated from the salafi methodology. Verily, one does not take knowledge from these stations for indeed those individuals that are unknown or have deviated from the correct path and the salafi methodology, one does not take knowledge from them.

This is because knowledge is from the religion, so let everyone look to who he takes his knowledge from. (Unclear sentence) Verily if you seek knowledge from a person of innovation or a man that you do not know his religion, you do not know if is methodology is safe or unsafe. And the methodology (of an individual) is known by either being widespread or asking the salafi scholars. You say to them: We have an individual so and so , do you know this person? If they reply: We know him to have the correct methodology and belief. Then one can take from him, but if they say, we don’t know him then you should continue to ask until you find out about him.

Quraan & Tajweed Studies: Al Waqf

Posted in Quraan, Seeking Knowledge at 4:02 am by Desert Diaries

 السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

Al Waqf

Knowledge of the proper places to stop, or pause while reciting the Quraan is very important.  This helps the reader to avoid making mistakes, and altering the meaning of an aayah.  Often we come to long aayaat and “run out of breath.”  In Shaa Allaah, the permissible (Jaa-iz), prohibited (Ghayru Jaa-iz), and unsuitable (Qabeeh) places to stop are as follows:

o - The end of an aayah

م - Compulsory stop to avoid altering the meaning. (م has other functions that will be discussed another time).

ط - Normal stop at the end of a sentence or thought.

س - Moderate pause: the breaking of the voice at a word for a brief moment without taking a breath for 2 counts (about 2 seconds).  {See Sooratul Mutaffifeen, aayah 14. It’s above the word بَلْ }

ج -  Permissible stop, you can continue if you want.  This is known as Equality.”

ص  and ز  - Permissible stop but preferable to continue.  This is known as “Salyi.”  Salyi is also known as “The Good Stop.” You will find a figure resembling ص  but with a different type of “tail.” {See Sooratul Mutaffifeen, aayah 14. It’s above the word كَلَّا }

ق - Permissible to continue but it’s preferred that you stop.  This is known as “Qalyi.”  You will also find a figure resembling ق  with a different type of tail.  {See Sooratul Fath (48), aayah #19, above the word نَهَا }

ك - Observe as previous symbol in the aayah.

Example:  If you have an aayah with Qalyi above a word, then further along in that same aayah you have ك above a word, you must observe the rules of Qalyi for ك.

لا - Prohibited stop. Do not stop at all when you see this above a word because it’s strongly connected to what follows it in terms of meaning.  This sign is exactly the way that one would write the word “No” (Laa) in ‘Arabic.  {See Sooratul Muddaththir (74), aayah # 31}

Precautionary Stop - It appears as 3 dots, in a set. One set of 3 appears before the other in the same aayah. You can stop at either of these two places but not at both. See Sooratul Baqarah (2), aayah # 2. The first set appears above the word رَيْبَ, the second appears above the word فِيهِ.

You’re permitted to disregard the لا sign at the end of the short aayaat. The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam paused at the end of each and every aayah. {Related in Bukhaaree in A’faal Al ‘Ibaad with a Saheeh Isnaad}

A Brief Introduction To Tajweed

The Term “Islaamic” Nasheed is a Deception

Posted in Quraan at 4:00 am by Desert Diaries

As salaamu ‘alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh.

Shaykhul -Islaam ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah):  “I know that in the ‘golden age’, the first and best three centuries, in the Hijaaz, Syria, Yemen, Egypt,  Maghrib (Morocco), ‘Iraq, Khorasan, none of the religious and righteous people, the ascetics and those who worshipped Allaah much, would gather to listen to this whistling and clapping and drum-beating and so on. This was innovated after that at the end of the second century, and whenever the imaams saw it, they denounced it.”

As for these anaasheed which are described as “Islaamic” but are accompanied with musical instruments, giving them this name lends them some measure of legitimacy, but in fact they are singing and music, so calling them Islaamic nasheeds is falsehood and deception. They cannot be a substitute for singing, as an evil thing cannot be substituted for another evil thing. We should replace something evil with something good. Listening to it on the grounds that it is Islaamic and an act of worship is bid’ah, and Allaah does not allow this. We ask Allaah to keep us safe and sound.

Look for Your Heart in 3 Places

From the Sayings of ‘Abdullaah ibn Mas’ood

Ash Shaykh Al Imaam Al ‘Alaamah Ibnu Qayyim Al Jawziyyah

(رحمه الله)

A man in the company of ‘Abdullaah ibn Mas’ood said: “I do not wish to be from amongst the companions of the Right Hand, I wish to be from amongst the Muqaraboon (those who are brought close (to Allaah)!”

So ‘Abdulllaah said: “But here is a man who wishes that if he died he would not be resurrected [from fear of Allaah].” Meaning himself.

He left his house one-day and people followed him, so he said to them: “Is there anything that you need?”

They said: “No, but we want to walk with you.”

He said: “Go back, because it is lowly /dishonorable for the follower and a Fitnah for the one being followed.”

He also said: “If you knew about me what I know about myself, you would pour sand over my head.

None of you should make Taqleed (blindly follow) another man in regards to his religion, if he [one being followed] believes then he believes and if he disbelieves then he disbelieves. If you had to blindly follow someone, then take those who have passed away as examples, for indeed those who are alive are not safe from Fitnah.

“Look for you heart it three places:

1) When you are listening to the Quraan;

2) in the circles of remembrance [of Allaah];

3) and when you are alone.

If you don’t find it in these places, then ask Allaah to bless you with a heart for indeed you have no heart. Indeed people have become proficient in speech, so he whose deeds are in accordance to his speech, then he is the one that will attain his portion of reward, and he whose deeds are in opposition to his speech, then he is one that only rebukes himself. Truly I believe that a man forgets knowledge that he once possessed due to a sin that he practices. Knowledge is not in narrating a lot, but knowledge is fear [of Allaah].”
