1 Month Intensive ‘Arabic Language Course - Makkah KSA

Posted in 'Arabic, FYI, Seeking Knowledge tagged , , , at 2:55 am by Desert Diaries

As salaamu ‘alaikum …just sharing some info posted in the Muhaajir E-Group:

Welcome to the ZamZam Institute

As the language in which the sacred Quran was revealed, and in which the majority of Islamic scholarship is conducted, Arabic occupies a very special and beloved position in the very soul of the Ummah. It is both the language in which we pray to our Creator and the gateway to the knowledge that enables us to properly fulfill our duties as Muslims.

Allah says: “Verily, We have sent it down as an arabic Quran in order that you may understand.” (Yusuf 12:2)

Sheikh Muhammed bin Saleh Al Uthaymeen (rahimahullah) said:

From the benefits of learning the Arabic language is correction of the tongue with the Arabic tongue which the speech of Allah was revealed in. Because of this, understanding the Arabic language is extremely important. But the sciences of the Arabic language are difficult in the beginning and become easy thereafter. It is the example of a house made of cane (the likes of sugar cane),but its door is made of steel. Meaning, it is difficult for one to enter, but once one does, is then made easy. Due to this, I encourage the student to learn the foundations of the language in order to make the rest easy for him/her.
(source: Sharh Al Ajromiyah pg.9)

Shaykh-ul-Islam ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullah) mentioned a statement of Imam Ash Shafi’ee (rahimahullah), he said:

…this is because the (language) that Allah choose is Arabic.  He revealed His glorious book (The Quran) in this language and He made it the tongue of His final and last prophet, Muhammed -sallahu alahi wa salem.  Therefore, we say: it is befitting for everyone that has the ability to learn this language to do so, this is because it should be the most desired language to learn.   (source: Iktidah As Siralt Al Mustaqeem 1/521)

Thus it is a great honor that The ZamZam Institute is blessed to offer one month “Arabic Intensive Program”  for everybody who is coming for Umrah and would like to benefit during her/his stay in Makkah. The Arabic classes commence with an introduction to classical Arabic with a view towards further study using source materials in their original arabic.

Women Outnumber Men Who Memorized the Qur’aan in Al-Asyah

Posted in Quraan, What's Going on in the Gulf? tagged at 2:55 pm by Desert Diaries

Women Outnumber Men Who Memorized Qur’an in Asyah
Khaled Al-Awadh, Arab News

BURAIDAH, 8 June 2008 — Twenty Holy Qur’an memorizers were honored at a special function held in a mosque in Al-Asyah, 65 kilometers east of Buraidah, recently. The event was sponsored by Al-Asyah Philanthropic Society.

For the first time in the history of Al-Asyah Society for Memorizing the Holy Qur’an, women graduates outnumbered men graduates: 11 women memorized the entire Qur’an this year against nine men.

The graduates received cash prizes and certificates from Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University. There are 12 Qur’an schools for women run by the Al-Asyah Philanthropic Society.

“In Buraidah, there are more than 30 schools for women,” said Ali ibn Mohammad Al-Ajlan, general director of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs’ branch in the city.

Citing the criticism of some writers on the role of Qur’an memorization societies, Sulaiman ibn Abdulrahman Al-Rubei, the head of Qassim Holy Qur’an Philanthropic Society played down such propaganda and described the Qur’an memorization societies as “strong, solid and clean.”

Al-Rubei pointed out that the number of graduates of these societies reached 2,300 in Qassim alone. “Qur’an schools for girls have reached 130 schools in the region,” he added. The number of students at Al-Asyah Society alone has reached about 1,600. They belong to 94 groups in different mosques in Al-Asyah.

More than 150 students have memorized the Qur’an and now lead prayers in local mosques or work as teachers. The society has established 12 centers for women with more than 530 students.

Among the graduates honored is Amanullah Wali Al-Rahman Khan, a 12-year-old Indian student who memorized the entire Qur’an. Amanullah’s sister, Asmaa, is one of the 11 women graduates who were honored at the function.

“I thank God for helping me to memorize the Holy Qur’an at this young age. It is a great pride and at the same time a big responsibility. I thank everyone who has helped me to achieve this goal, including my parents and teachers,” the boy said.

Schools for Children

Posted in Kidz, Quraan, Schools for Children tagged at 9:06 am by Desert Diaries

As salaamu ‘alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh. Many sisters want to know about schools in Jeddah for children covering subjects like reading, math, science, etc. Wallaahi I don’t have any info to give you right now. ‘Afwaan. My daughter was only 1 and 1/2 years old when we made hijrah so, I did not look into these things. Alhamdulillaah, now she’s old enough to attend school and finding a good one for her is a concern of mine. I’ll keep you updated on my findings In Shaa Allaah.

I do know that children 3 and up can attend tahfeeth schools. Some will take them at 2 and 1/2 if they are potty trained. They are taught to read and write ‘Arabic, short suwar, short ahaadeeth, basic English like A, B, C, 1, 2, 3 and do activities for their age level. They even have Tawheed classes, Maa Shaa Allaah. It’s beautiful to hear the babies say” Ar Rahmaanu ‘alal ‘Arsh Istawaa.”

Here’s some info on the school I attended some time ago: Daarul Haafithaat al ‘Ishreen - Quraan Memorization School for Women & Children

Sisters living in Jeddah - You are very much welcome to share your experiences, give advice related to living here and whatever else you have of benefit.

Posted in 'Arabic, FYI, Seeking Knowledge tagged , at 5:13 pm by Desert Diaries

As salaamu ‘alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh. May Allaah give us tawfeeq (success) with learning ‘Arabic.

You can practice with these tools In Shaa Allaah. Read a small risaalah from a scholar, try to understand it, then check it with the gadgets below. They are not perfect…but they help.

In business? You can place a translation gadget on your web site which will encourage non-English speaking customers to visit and possibly make a purchase In Shaa Allaah, Wallaahu Aa’lam.

This may also help spread the da’wah. So, if you have a deen related page, put up the translation gadget In Shaa Allaah.

Google Translate adds 10 new languages…

5/15/2008 02:06:00 PM

…and that’s great news any way you say it. Language is one of the biggest challenges we have in making information universally accessible. As part of the machine translation team within Google Research, I’m happy to report we’ve been hard at work to overcome this challenge. We’ve recently added translation capabilities for 10 new languages to Google Translate, bringing the total to 23 languages. The newly featured languages include Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Finnish, Hindi, Norwegian, Polish, Romanian and Swedish.

In addition, you can now translate text and web pages as well as perform cross-language searches between any two languages that we offer. For example, we now support Chinese translation to/from any of our languages (e.g., Chinese to French). So for those of you who will be following or attending the Olympics in Beijing this fall, you’ll be able to more easily find and access content from local sources.

We’ve also added a “Detect Language” option to help you automatically identify the language of the text you’re trying to translate. Keep in mind that the longer the text, the more accurate it will be. And for those of you who have embedded the Google Translate My Page gadget in your website to give it global reach, these new languages will automatically appear. Developers can also take advantage of these new languages in our AJAX language API.

While our system is quite good, we know it’s not perfect. Machine translation is a hard problem, but it plays an important role in helping people access content they might otherwise be unable to read. We’re constantly working to improve the quality, so if you find a translation that’s not quite right, let us know by using our “Suggest a better translation” feature.

Seeking Knowledge at an Old Age

Posted in Seeking Knowledge tagged , at 8:27 am by Desert Diaries

Seeking knowledge at an old age

Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-Uthaymeen

Reference: The Book of Knowledge - Page 162
Category: Knowledge

We ask Allaah to aid those He has honoured with an interest for seeking knowledge. However, knowledge within itself is a difficult undertaking that requires great effort. We know that the older a person grows, the larger he becomes physically, and the weaker he becomes intellectually.

So this person who is starting to seek knowledge at an old age should choose a trustworthy scholar to learn from, because gaining knowledge by way of the scholars saves time, is better and easier.

It saves time because the scholar is like an encyclopedia, especially if he is well-versed in Arabic grammar, Tafseer, Hadeeth, Fiqh and other sciences. So instead of having to read twenty books for instance, he can easily acquire the knowledge within them from a scholar, this is why it saves time.

It is also safer. For one may rely on a book whose author`s method is different from the method of the righteous predecessors, whether in deriving evidence or issuing rulings.

Therefore we advice this person who wants to seek knowledge at old age to stick to and study under a reliable scholar, for this will save him time. He should not despair and say: `I am too old now`, because by doing so he would deny himself knowledge.

It was narrated that a man once entered a Masjid after Dhuhr and sat down, so someone commanded him to get up and perform two Rak`ahs, so he got up and prayed. On another occasion, he entered the Masjid after `Asr and started to perform two Rak`ahs, the man told him: `Do not pray now, this is a time when prayers are prohibited.`

He then said to himself: `I must seek knowledge.` He then started seeking knowledge until he became an Imaam. It was ignorance that drove him to seek knowledge. If Allaah knows you have good intentions and blesses you with success, you may acquire a great deal of knowledge.

‘Arabic Vocab. Game

Posted in 'Arabic, Family Oriented Fun, Kidz tagged , at 2:02 am by Desert Diaries

As salaamu ‘alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh. I was trying to come up with ideas for my daughters homemade ‘Arabic vocab picture book. As I was going through the alphabet and thought that it would be fun to see how fast I could name an object for each letter.
So, here’s a new game for you and your children….you can even battle your spouse at a quick game of wits (the loser has to wash the dishes or something like this).
  • Name 1 object for each ‘Arabic letter.
  • Time each person with a stop watch.
  • Think fast! You can’t skip a letter or pause the stop watch.
  • If the player pauses longer than 5 secs, add 3 extra seconds to their end time (this is 3 secs for every 5).
  • Keep track of all times. The person with the least amount of time wins.
See if you can go through the whole alphabet faster the next time you play without using the same words. In Shaa Allaah this will help all players increase their vocabulary. Have fun.
