What not to Wear: Matte Faux Leather Shoes

Posted in FYI, Health, Life in Jeddah, Weather tagged at 6:19 am by Desert Diaries

As salaamu ‘alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh. I’m often asked which type of material is best to beat the hot weather. For sure some materials are better than others, but the bottom line is you will be hot no matter what you wear.

As for shoes….

Do not wear matte faux leather (i.e. patent leather) shoes during the daylight hours if you have to walk for more than five minutes or your feet will fry. I’m speaking from experience here. I decided to walk home from school last week while wearing my matte faux leather slip-ons - big mistake… my toes were on fire!

These types of shoes provide comfort, convenience and a tad bit of style without over doing it. You can get in and out of them in breeze, no burning, no sweat.
The streets are generally tore up and in most districts sidewalks are nonexistent so, look for shoes with a comfy sole like these:

Avoid archless shoes if you must do a lot of walking. There are tons of cute shoes here but, many of them are archless providing zero support. Overtime, this will cause you to have back pain and aching feet.

Kingdom Approves UN Convention on Rights of Special Needs People
Nuha Adlan, Arab News

RIYADH, 3 June 2008 — Social workers, officials and special needs people alike welcomed the government’s recent decision to adopt the first international convention on the rights of persons with disabilities.

Following instructions from Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah and recommendations of the Shoura Council, the Saudi Cabinet last week decided to adopt the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

The convention, which is to be signed in the near future, will result in the Kingdom abiding by all of its articles. Prior to giving its approval, the Council of Ministers thoroughly studied the Shoura Council’s decision in this regard last January.

The convention was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on Dec. 13, 2006, and was opened for signature and ratification on March 30, 2007.

The 50-article convention asserts the rights to education, health, work, adequate living conditions, freedom of movement, freedom from exploitation and equal recognition before the law for persons with disabilities. It also addresses the need for persons with disabilities to have access to public transport, buildings and other facilities and recognizes their capacity to make decisions for themselves.

Dr. Naser Al-Mousa, educational consultant for educational services at the Ministry of Education, who is also disabled, believes the convention will better the plight of disabled people in Saudi Arabia. “The Council of Ministers’ approval is a good step. … Signing the convention and joining other countries will hopefully be the next step,” he said.

“The articles of the convention are comprehensive and tackle every matter in their life… I am so happy about adopting the convention. I am eager to see the implementation of Article 24, which deals with education. We will fight hard to apply it,” Al-Mousa added.

Omar Al-Abdan, 30, is unemployed and uses a wheelchair. He told Arab News that he was thrilled by the news.

He added that he has been unable to find a job, as he was unable to find a working environment that accommodates his needs. “I am really happy to know about this, especially since there are many articles that talk about employment and education,” he added.

“To begin with, the idea of giving support to people with disabilities is originally derived from Islam, which has always urged people to support and cooperate with those who need help,”Al-Abdan said. “I wonder if I will be able to work in a place that suits my disability.”

Despite all the promises of a better tomorrow, some disabled people are concerned that they would not be able to enjoy the rights listed in the convention.

Muhammad Al-Qasim, a 20-year-old wheelchair user, said he was disappointed by the current situation faced by disabled people and did not see any hope in the future. “I think the problem cannot be solved by signing an agreement. The real problem lies in the minds of people who underestimate the disabled,” he said.

“I do not want to jump to conclusions. Who can guarantee me that the agreement will make my life better?” he asked. “I know that the government is doing a tremendous effort to support us. However, people have a preconception that disabled people are incapable… If anyone is able to change an attitude then I am up for change,” he added.

Integration of the disabled in the social and educational life has been among the Kingdom’s main priorities for the past 15 years.

Help Your Children Discover the Joys of Eating Healthy

Helping Your Children Discover the Joys of Eating Healthy Foods

Understanding that by a healthy foods diet you can provide your children with good nutrition that will benefit their health is one thing. Getting them to eat and enjoy those foods is another. Here are some tips to help you inspire your children to eat healthy foods.

Educate your children about the world’s healthiest foods!

Teach your children why certain foods are good for them. We can probably all remember our parents telling us that eating healthy would help us to grow up big and strong, yet many did not tell us of the benefits we would experience while still being a child. And we know a great deal more about these benefits today. Since kids are very “now-focused,” explaining how eating healthy foods will help them feel good, look great, give them the kind of long-lasting energy that will make them stars in their school’s sports program, and help them to learn and think clearly, so they can excell in the classroom as well, will motivate them. Depending upon their age, explain to them the specific benefits they will notice and appreciate. For example, you could tell them how foods that contain fiber and complex carbohydrates will give them more energy for playing longer than those made from refined carbohydrates and sugars, which, like firecrackers, quickly fizzle out after a brief burst of energy. Tell them how a complete spectrum of vitamins and minerals will increase their concentration and ability to learn and do well in their schoolwork. Talk to them about how omega-3 fatty acids not only support brain development, but are essential for beautiful clear skin, and shiny hair, and also help prevent or reduce itchy eyes, runny noses, and other allergic reactions.

Introduce a New Fruit, Vegetable or Grain Every Week

Most young children are fascinated by new things, and the colors, shapes, textures and tastes of different foods are no exception. And since foods have a rich history of tradition and heritage that kids can enjoy, learning about and eating new foods can be a lot of fun — and it’s easy to do. Just use our Foods/Spices Database for anecdotes about the food to share with your children.

Make Grocery-Shopping Fun for Your Little Ones

Take your kids with you to the market and make it an educational and participative experience for them. Explore the colorful produce department together. If you purchase food items from bulk bins, let your children help you scoop them into the bags. If they are old enough to read, play the “food label game” with them by having them read the labels, trying to determine by looking at the ingredients which foods are the most healthy.

Visit a Local Farm, Explore a Farmer’s Market, or Talk to Your Greengrocer

Nature, living things and the process of how things work captivate children. By seeing where food comes from, how it is grown, and meeting the people, such as local farmers who grow the food or the produce manager at your local grocery who knows the farms in your area, your children will develop a real appreciation and more intimate relationship with the food they eat.

Involve Your Children With Growing Foods Themselves

Children love to be productive and creative, and accomplish something on their own. You can help them create thier own mini-”farm” right at home by simply growing a pot or two of herbs or sprouting some seeds or grains. Once your child has experienced the miracle of a tender green shoot emerging from the soil you have watered together, he or she will understand through personal experience that food is a miraculous gift.

Let Your Children “Help” You Cook

All children can participate in cooking (even toddlers can “help” with your assistance). Design their involvement depending upon their age. Small children can help measure and mix ingredients. Older children can cut and cook food and choose new recipes to try. Involving your children in the cooking process will award them with a sense of achievement, pride in eating what they helped to prepare, and cooking skills that they can rely on as adults. Make your kitchen the heart of your home, a warm and friendly place where healthy food prepared with love makes memories that will nourish your children throughout their lives.Remember, the more colorful the meal, the greater the range of phytonutrients it contains, so let your children be creative with the colorful vegetables and fruits and help to choose a vivid palette for your meals.

Buy or Make Special Decorative Containers for School Meals and Snacks

Packing the foods your children take to school in bright and decorative containers can help them feel special and loved. Let them select containers they like at the store or decorate any of the new, inexpensive reusable containers with favorite stickers. A healthy meal is a present for your child’s body; a gift wrapping adds to the fun.

Conclusion

A healthy foods diet can confer wonderful benefits to your children. They will be happier, healthier, even more beautiful, and filled with energy and good spirits. With simple games and educational activities, you can have fun sharing with your children the delights of foods that taste good and are good for them.

Herbal Hair Care  F. A . Q.

by  Janice Kumar

I have received a number of emails with requests for more hair care information and have compiled a frequently asked questions list. I have tried to provide some answers which maybe useful for your hair condition. Please do go through this information before contacting me. Due to the volume of mails I receive, it becomes very difficult to answer queries on a personal basis. The internet is also not a good medium when it is important to have more in depth information before a solution can be suggested. In these cases, it may be important to find a herbal care professional in your local area.

What is a good tonic for hair ?

A combination of olive oil,  almond oil, and coconut oil blended equally is an excellent source of nourishment for your scalp and hair. Blend the three oils equally in one small container and apply weekly and leave over night. Wash off in the morning to find soft silky, healthy hair. This is an excellent hair care tonic for long term usage.

Is there a quick hair care solution for dry and unhealthy hair?

A quick solution can be found in lemon juice. Lemon juice helps provide and maintain the correct pH balance in the hair which can go awry during extreme weather conditions. Squeeze one lemon into a mug of water and rinse your hair after a normal hair wash with this lime water. This will help provide bounce to the hair and also help in getting rid of minor infections if any. Do this once or twice a week, for two to three weeks and then stop.

Can lemon juice really help in curing dandruff?

There are many causes of dandruff. When the pH balance of the scalp/hair is affected and excessive oil is secreted by the scalp, it is important to get the pH balance normal again. In this case, mixing the juice of one lemon in a little coconut oil and applying directly on the a hair and scalp can help regain that pH balance quickly. It is important to rinse off this mixture after half and hour or so and apply it at least twice a week for two to three weeks to find a gradual improvement in the dandruff condition. Lemon juice can also help kill off minor scalp infections which can help in dandruff control.

Incase, the dandruff is caused by some other reason, this may not really work.

Can you suggests a special pack for thinning hair?

First of all, I suggest you start with the hair tonic given above. This will help in the long run.

Now to create a quick fix for thinning hair, try this special hair pack. Mix one egg, two teaspoons (10ml) castor oil, one teaspoon vinegar, one teaspoon glycerin and one teaspoon fenugreek powder to smooth paste. Massage this paste into the hair and scalp. Now cover your head with a warm towel  (a towel, soaked in hot water with the water squeezed out). Wait for twenty minutes and then wash the hair with warm water to find bouncy, thicker looking, smooth and beautiful hair. You may try this, once a week and it will help the hair. Fenugreek seeds will help in preventing hair fall while the glycerin will give the hair bounce. The vinegar helps in restoring pH balance.

Is there a herbal cure for falling hair?

There can be multiple health, diet and lifestyle related factors contributing to hair fall. Stress and poor diet can play havoc with hair. You need to understand the cause before you can treat hair fall.

To start with  get the pH balance right with the lemon and coconut oil massage described above. Then prepare a hair fall herbal oil as follows. Crush 20 grams curry leaves and 20 grams fenugreek seeds and a garlic clove to prepare a paste. Boil this paste in coconut oil and allow the mixture to cool. Bottle this oil and use twice a week in the night and wash off in the morning. This should help in controlling hair fall in many cases.

How do I treat brittle hair and split ends, the herbal way?

Brittle hair leads to split ends. Split ends have to be treated/trimmed by a hair dresser. Brittle hair can be fixed with a powerful protein boost. Provide the hair with a protein hair mask by mixing an egg with 20ml curd and juice of one lemon. Massage this mixture into the hair. Leave it on for 30 minutes and then shampoo it off. Do it twice a week for the first two weeks and then once a week for two to three months and find your hair becoming soft and manageable.

Ways to Declutter Your Mind

Posted in Health tagged , at 8:27 pm by Desert Diaries

Ways to Declutter Your Mind

By Dr. Mercola

You may have read articles about how to declutter your home or your desk, but if anything needs decluttering, it’s your mind.

While your brain is a complex and confusing organ — and your mind is certainly not like an inbox that can be sorted through — decluttering your mind is actually not difficult.

You can sort through your mind, even getting past the scar tissue of old hurts and traumas, with these simple actions:

1. Breathe: Take a few deep breaths, and then just focus on your breathing for a few minutes. It has a calming effect, and allows other thoughts to just float away.

2. Write it down: If you have a bunch of things on your mind, get them on paper and off your mind.

3. Rethink your sleep: If you aren’t getting enough sleep, or your sleeping pattern isn’t ideal, it can affect you a great deal.

4. Take a walk: Get outside and do some kind of physical activity; it clears your mind.

5. Do less: Cross half the things off your to-do list; just pick a few things to get done today, and focus on those.

6. Declutter your surroundings: Having a lot of stuff around you occupies part of your mind, even if you don’t realize it.

7. Identify the essential: This means figuring out what is most important in your life, and focusing on these things.

8. Get in touch with nature: Looking at the ocean, a river, some trees or anything “green” can be calming and focusing at the same time.

9. Go slower: Walk slower, talk slower, drive slower and even work slower. All of these things tell your mind that you’re not in a hurry, and that you want to take life at your own, non-rushed pace.

10. Single-task: Multi-tasking fills your mind with a lot of clutter, without a lot of productivity. Instead of multi-tasking, single-task by focusing on just one thing at a time.

Dr. Mercola’s Comments:
If you woke up this morning with your mind racing, trying to remember your entire to-do list while getting yourself, and perhaps your kids, ready for the day, you are clearly in need of decluttering your mind.

But really, who isn’t?

Imagine, for a second, the relief and the pure joy you would feel if you knew that everything in your life was in its place, and all was well. Yet, many of us hold in our minds an obscene amount of information, such as:

  • Regrets from our past, feelings of guilt, worries and other negative emotions
  • Daily tasks that need to be done
  • Long-term projects yet to be completed
  • Reminders for your spouse, kids and other family members
  • Goals and dreams
  • Deadlines for work, bills, taxes and more
Obviously, keeping all of this in your head, and running through this list regularly to make sure nothing is forgotten, is exhausting. And even then you probably still feel a nagging sense of unease that something important is being overlooked.
