You’ve just won a 2009 Hummer!

hummerTwo weeks ago I received text messages stating that I’ve won a 2009 Hummer. In order to claim said prize, I must call 004 2 366 269 2270. A week later I received another text message stating that if I did not want the Hummer, I could claim a substitute prize of 15,000 SAR.

There have been several similar giveaways in the Kingdom by legit, well-known companies, however, I think this particular one is trying to dupe unsuspecting people into thinking that they are one in the same and the outcome could possibly be the victim parting with his/her personal info and wealth (i.e. ”Give us your bank account number so that we can deposit your prize money.”)

Why I personally feel that this is a hoax:
  1. The name of the company sponsoring this “giveaway” is unknown. Text message I.Ds: “Urgent” and “Winner.” – If they are legit, why the ambiguity?
  2. Major giveaways are usually announced in circulars, on billboards, in newspapers, etc. – Why are these guys hiding?
  3. In normal cases, if a person does not respond in an adequate amount of time the prize automatically goes to the runner-up. The sponsors will not hunt you down and text you to no end to give you a free car or money (like these guys).
  4. They already have my mobile number, hence the frequent text messages, so why not have representative call me with the logistics?
A fiddle, rip-off, okie-doke or whatever you want to call it…this does not sit right with me.
