Update: Online ‘Arabic Courses via Ummul Qura University Makkah KSA
Umm Al-Qura Program to Teach Arabic
www.ArabNews.comJEDDAH, 12 May 2007 — The Umm Al-Qura University has embarked on a project to make Arabic language learning easy for non-Arabs living in the Kingdom and elsewhere in the world.
The Makkah-based university, one of the oldest in the Kingdom, will develop an electronic program to facilitate learning of Arabic through the Internet and distance education system.
“We have decided to launch this project titled the Makkah Program to Teach Arabic Language to nonnative speakers considering the growing demand to learn Arabic worldwide,” said Dr. Ali Al-Harithy, head of the Institute of Arabic Language for Nonnative Speakers.
Under the new project, students will have to attend a four-semester program with 120 credit hours. “This program will be available not only for the institute’s students but also for others who can access to the institute’s website on the Internet,” he said. The website will also show live classrooms from the institute.
“Students in different countries will be able to follow lessons of this program through the Internet,” he said. Students in foreign countries, however, have to visit the Kingdom to attend a single semester to obtain additional skills.
Students attending the program will have to sit an exam in order to receive certificates. “The new system will increase the number of beneficiaries and save a lot of time and energy,” Al-Harithy said.
The examination, named Makkah Test, will be similar to Tofel for English, he said, adding it would help the university understand how successful were students to learn the language through the program. The institute, which was established in 1976, receives about 100 students from foreign countries annually under a scholarship program.

For intensive studies, try Ummul Qura in Makkah. There are sisters commuting by bus from Jeddah and the ride is only 45 minutes, walhamdulillaah. I can ask a friend of mine who’s currently studying there for more information In Shaa Allaah.
Do some research on the Zam Zam Inst. in Makkah. The admin of Bakkah Net may be able to help you (he may know the owner - Allaahu Aa’lam). When you reach his web site, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on “contact us.”
As for “intensive” schools in Jeddah teaching the ‘Arabic language, I don’t know if I’d call them “intensive.” Most have classes 3 days a week (4 at the most), but you only get 2 or 3 hours per day for 3 months. This is not enough clock time, Allaahu Aa’lam. These types of schools average at about 1,500 SAR every 3 months. You are better off finding a sister who is faseehah and pay her that same amount for the whole year.
There are many sisters here who are kind and will offer you free classes, but most do not speak English (that in itself can be a pro or a con depending on the level of the student). They tend to race after the ajr of teaching someone the Quraan and ‘Arabic language, may Allaah reward them.
Al Huda School - Allaahu Aa’lam. Let me ask someone else and get back to you.
It is good that you want to brush up before coming here, zaadakillaahu ilmaan naafi’ aameen. No matter where you go or what you plan to study, there will be an entry exam.
As for the last 10 nights of Ramadhaan in KSA - In Shaa Allaah I will try my best to write about my experience. It’s a lil hard for me, but I’ll try.
I will try to research this more In Shaa Allaah.
My opinion (which doesn’t mean much) is regarding just a few places in Jeddah.

“Last time I asked about it - we were actually informing the women’s side abt it more than asking them lol…y’anni- they didn’t even know about it. Few Options for Older Saudi Students

RIYADH, 19 March 2008 — Jaber Al-Abdulmohsen is a 58-year-old Saudi man, who decided to go to college recently to pursue studies in special education but he learned quickly that there were few options for older students.
“I had to delay going to college due to my parent’s health,” he said. “And after nine years, I couldn’t pursue further education because higher education institutions in the Kingdom do not accept applications from those who have been out of college for more than five years.”
So Al-Abdulmohsen dismissed the idea of continuing his education until much later in life when he was accepted at the only college in the Kingdom that admits older students: the Arab Open University, Saudi Arabia, an accredited institution affiliated with The Open University, UK.
Al-Abdulmohsen is one of 105 students over the age of 50, a demographic at the university that has more than doubled in the past five years. Sixteen percent of these older students are women.
Abdullah Al-Salamah, rector of the Arab Open University, Saudi Arabia, said that the growing numbers of older students seeking admission to college is a challenge confronting all higher education institutions in the Kingdom, public and private.
Not only would the Ministry of Higher Education need to lift the ban on accepting students who have been out of college for more than five years but, over time, institutions need to incorporate continuing-education programs such as ones found in universities in North America and Europe.
These programs are specifically designed to help older students overcome their unique challenges such as learning computers and balancing the demands of college with job and domestic responsibilities.
“Some students really need special courses that can assist them in upgrading their skills, especially considering they are returning to college after many years,” said Faizah, a 42-year-old Saudi woman with a bachelor’s degree, who would like to go back to university to improve her spoken and written English.
The Kingdom offers free college education to its citizens seeking to attend public universities; the government also offers scholarships to study abroad.
Increasing Pressure
According to the Ministry of Education, graduates are growing by nine percent annually, which puts increasing pressure on these institutions to make room for those seeking to go to college.
Amira Almenieir, the head of student affairs at Alyamamah private college in Riyadh, admitted that the institution does not have any senior students.
She pointed out that the college would consider giving conditional acceptance to some cases, especially for those who are already in the work force but are seeking to hone their skills and knowledge.
Abdulrahman Bawazeer, 48, is one such student. Bawazeer, who has a bachelor’s degree in business administration, took up a job at Saudi Arabian Airlines. He said that when he was younger, having a high school diploma was good enough to find a decent job. Today, he says, his bachelor’s degree is barely enough.
“Throughout my career, I have been passed up for promotion due to my limited educational background,” he said, adding that he would like to go back to school to pursue advanced studies in business administration with the aim of starting his own business to carry him into his golden years.
Continuing education is not easy even when policies make it easier to do so, as Sarah Mohammed found out.
The 53-year-old Saudi woman dropped out of the Open University because she couldn’t balance her job, her charitable activities and her domestic responsibilities. “There’s no reason to stop learning, but I just couldn’t make it because I couldn’t manage my time,” she said.

I have something beneficial from Shaykh Mohammad al Malki (particularly for sisters in Jeddah). As soon as I find the recording I will transcribe what he said in regards to the permissibility of us going from Jeddah to Makkah without a mahram. His explanation was interesting. Believe me, I’m not interested in residing in a land without a mahram, especially in Saudi Arabia where the need for a mahram to meet your basic needs is so necessary. Anything can happen, plus one would have to rely on taxi as transport which would mean being alone with a man. And many other complications are almost unavoidable. I was thinking perhaps if one resides near their school (i.e. walking distance) then it may be a bit easier. (Being in Riyaadh near the kibaar ullema is a dream.) Regardless, I look forward to the shaykh’s advice.
My father is currently residing in Hargeisa, Somaliland, so this has become my next objective inshaAllaah. There are opportunities to seek ilm there, so I’ll take advantage. It’s nothing like being in Riyaadh near the kibaar, but I think its the most feasible/suitable for me. Wallaahu ‘alam

-Q: After the Language Institute, does a student automatically get accepted into the Islamic Sciences Department? So they have an Uloom al-Hadeeth major/school? Barak Allahu feekum.
A: No, after the language program only a selected few are accepted into the actual University. 1) You have to have an accumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher- nothing less than mumtaaz (some students have been accepted w/an overall jayd jiddan), 2) your mahram has to still be present, 3) you also have to take an entrance exam. There are other rules that apply but these 3 seem to be the most important as far as women are concerned from what I’ve seen, Wallahu Alam. The University does have a Kitaab was Sunnah department, in which Uloomul Hadeeth is studied in depth.

Some of the Saudi universities have announced scholarships for Australian students to study Arabic language.I am really keen to learn Arabic but unfortunately most of the universities offer admissions only to those who are less than 25 years age.I am 38 years old and have got the potential InshaAllah to learn, as I finished my Master in Accounting just 2 years ago here in Australia.
Can the universities offer me a place ??? I am pretty sure there arent many students from Australia who are going to apply for these scholarships.
Will you help/ guide me how to persuade these univesities that better to allow old student rather than wasting an opportunity.
As,no one from Australia has applied so for, even the Saudi Embassy staff also werent sure about the process before I pushed them and asked them.

First of all, I was wondering if my mahram has to be present throughout my study at Ummul Qura? Also, how long is the study program for Arabic for non-native speakers? I am currently studying Journalism at the American University of Sharjah and in my third year, can I transfer my credits to Ummul Qura?
Are there any other universities in Mecca/Medina/Jeddah that offer Shari’ah studies or Journalism or Islamic Media studies?
Is Medina University only open to brothers? Or can sisters apply too?
